The surface layers of the skin are supported underneath, by bundles of fibers composed mostly of collagen and elastin. This network of fibers forms the molecular sponge known as connective tissue. The spaces in the connective tissue are filled with water molecules, protein complexes and hyaluronic acid. This tissue structure transfers essential nutrients from the bloodstream, through the capillaries in our skin. Hyaluronic acid attracts and retains water. Hyaluronic acid is a natural compound found in the skin and joints and has many important functions.
