August Pullman is a perfectly normal ten-year-old child, like everyone else. At least that's the answer you'll get if you ask him how he feels about himself. But to everyone else, he is the miracle child who should have died the night he was born, the medical miracle that survived despite all odds of failure. Augustus has a major facial deformity, although his little body and brain are completely normal. Even after 27 surgeries, his face remains the reason people freak out at him when they pass him on the streets, move away from him to avoid accidentally touching him as if he has some contagious disease – his face is the reason he he spends the first ten years of his life being homeschooled and does not go to regular school, although he is smarter than many children his age. Now, in the fifth grade, August must forget about his previous life and try to fit into a normal school with normal children, try to prepare for the life that awaits him. To prove to everyone that he is just like them, regardless of his scary face. But how can he pull it off, especially when people can be so mean?
